Vernon F. Waters

Vernon Franklin Waters, 76, was called home to heaven on Sunday, October 19, 2014 at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines, Iowa. Services will be held Friday, October 24, 2014 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Family will begin greeting friends at 9:00 a.m. with funeral service scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m. Burial at Berwick Cemetery will follow the funeral.

Vern was born September 30, 1938 in Des Moines, IA to John and Lucy (Moncelle) Waters. He attended both East High School and Des Moines Technical High School and went on to play basketball at Grandview College. He was married to the love of his life, Diana Kay (Petty) Waters on February 19, 1961, and they were blessed with 53 ½ years of life together. Vern was blessed further through the gift of his sons, Randy, Eric, and Greg.

Vern was a lifelong eastsider and was so proud to be a supporter of East High School and Iowa State University. Vern was a past East High Booster Club President and Director of the AAU State Tournament. Vern coached youth/adult sports for 5 decades and has left many long lasting lessons and memories for hundreds of young men and women.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Lucy. Those surviving are his wife, Diana; sons, Randy (Joni), Eric (Liliana), and Greg (Cindy); ten grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
