Thelma Mitchell

Thelma Marie (Wing) Mitchell, 88, passed away Saturday, October 18, 2014 at Fairview Care Center in Dodge Center, MN after living there for 26 months. Thelma was born August 28, 1926 in Mt Plaske, IL to Jesse and Inez (Belger) Wing. She married Melvin C. Mitchell December 30, 1945 in Fairmont, MN. They had four children: Melvin V., Steven M., Sandra R., and Rebecca S. Mitchell.

Thelma spent most of her life at home as a homemaker. She worked for a short time in the 70s baking pies for the residents at Fairview Nursing Home in Dodge Center, MN. The residents affectionately called her the “pie lady.” Thelma enjoyed ice cream and malts and tending her African violets.

Thelma is survived by her son, Melvin V. Mitchell and wife, Candy of Des Moines; daughter, Rebecca S. (Mitchell) Ibach and husband, Kim of Kasson, MN; brother, Robert L. Wing of Des Moines; six grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; niece, Joyce Grimes; and nephews, Dale, Doug, and Jeffrey Wing.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin; children, Steven Michael and Sandra Ruth; brother, Vernie Wing; sister, Dorothy (Wing) Holm; and her parents.

Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, October 23, 2014 at Laurel Hill Cemetery, Des Moines.
