Hazel V. (Race) Crawford

Hazel V. (Race) Crawford, 91, died Saturday August 23, 2014 at Taylor House Hospice. She was born April 20, 1923 to Joseph and Ruby Race in Van Wert, Iowa.

Hazel spent her formative years in Osceola, Iowa. She married Dale Boham and they had three daughters, Connie, Sue, and Colene. They were divorced and Hazel later married Kenneth Crawford. They had a son, Kenneth Jr.

Hazel retired from Northwestern Bell as a long distance operator. She was a member of Marquisville United Methodist Church.

Hazel will be missed in many ways. She made many baby quilts for family and friends along with tea towels, hot pads and pillow cases. She loved family, friends, newspaper stories, birds, photography, playing cards, travel, her Easter Egg Tree, gardening, the Iowa Hawkeye's basketball team, Kurt Warner, and all of the Saydel High School teams. Hazel had a routine she faithfully followed. She read her Bible, wrote in her diary, walked two miles and rode a bike 10 miles.

Hazel is survived by her children, Connie Stivers of Des Moines, Sue Scovel (Jim) of Gilbert, AZ, Colene Chebuhar (Tom) of Centerville, Kenneth Crawford, Jr. of Pleasantville, Mary Anne Schuling of Huxley, and Maxine Biddle (Bob) of Johnston; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; and a brother, Lewis Race (Lois) of Ft. Walton Beach, FL.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kenneth Crawford Sr.; sisters, Mildred Beals Lockard, Elva Dustman, and Nellie Tagart; three grandchildren; and son-in-law, Ralph Shuling.

A funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. on Wednesday September 3, 2014 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines with burial to follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Marquisville United Methodist Church in loving memory of Hazel.
