Gladys Marie Gulling, 102, died Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at Altoona Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 25, 2014 at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street SW, Altoona with burial at Lowman Cemetery in Runnells. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the funeral on Monday.

Gladys was born December 22, 1911 in Runnells, Iowa to Arthur and Ada (Martin) Blood. She married Harlan Gulling in 1930, and they shared 77 years of marriage prior to his death in 2007. Gladys and Harlan farmed in Runnells and later worked for Meredith Publishing until their retirement. She was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary and for many years volunteered in the polio ward at Iowa Lutheran Hospital. She also served as the town correspondent for the Altoona Herald-Mitchellville Index, calling 32 people each week to write local news.

Gladys was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, neighbor, friend, and volunteer. She was well-known for her sewing and needlework, especially her crocheted dish “scratchers”. Over the years she tirelessly volunteered her time, sewing countless quilts and baby kimonos for church groups, nursing homes, and charities.

Gladys is survived by her daughter, Doris Warren of Altoona; six grandchildren, Kim (Kenny) Kincaid, LeAnn (Scott) Parker, Joni (Greg) Champion, Teri (Ric) Janes, Dave (Terry) Warren, and Janet (Jay) Petersma; fourteen great-grandchildren; and twelve great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; three brothers; her husband, Harlan; their daughter, Wanda Tingle; their son, Keith Gulling; and grandson, Troy Tingle.
