Garey Allen Bryan, 79, passed away on August 20, 2014 at Fountain West Care Center. Garey was born on December 3, 1934 to Herbert and Avis (Stookey) Bryan. He grew up in Des Moines, Iowa graduating from North High School in 1953 where he excelled in sports.

Garey served in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1959 serving on the aircraft carrier, the USS Ticonderoga. He married Patsy Ann Pugh September 9, 1956. Garey joined the Des Moines Police Department in 1960, retiring in July 1990. He also worked at Veterans Auditorium during his time on the Police Force. After retirement, he worked at the Federal Court House as a court security officer.

Garey enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling, and cooking for his “wild game feed”. But most of all, he cherished the time he spent with his family and friends at his cabin in Canada, Copper’s Cove on Eagle Lake.

Garey is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Pat; daughters, Cindy (Mac) Slauson and Carol (Don) Slight; son, Garey II; grandchildren, Connor Slight, Lilly Slight, Garey (Shannon) Bryan III, Jacob (Stephanie) Bryan, Mac J. (Cally) Slauson, Patrice (Matt) Witte, and Bryan (Ryan) Martin; and great-grandchildren, Morgan and Madison Bryan, Josie Bryan, Isabella and Katarina Witte, Caleb, Nya and Damareon Martin, and Teigan, Taityn, and Truman Slauson.

Garey was preceded in death by his father, mother, and brother, Herbert.

Garey belonged to several organizations: Iowa State Policeman’s Association, Des Moines Police Burial Association, Iowa State Chiefs of Police Association, Masonic Lodge, Za Ga Zig Shrine, and Elks Lodge.

Family will begin greeting friends at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 23, 2014, with funeral service to start at 12:00 p.m., at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines. Interment will take place at Masonic Cemetery following the funeral.

The family would like to thank Fountain West Care Center and HCI Hospice Services for all their care.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the family for a memorial to be placed at Eagle Lake in Canada in memory of Garey.
