Ralph and family I’m so sorry to hear about Joyce. Joyce was the volleyball coach in Heron Lake when I knew her. She was a wonderful coach and caring soul. In between my junior and senior year in high school I went with a classmate to visit California. Joyce had recently moved there and we connected up in Los Angeles. What a great day we had starting with the beach and ending that evening at a Natalie Cole concert. I also remember going to your wedding Ralph. I can still picture her holding hands with you outside the church; smile beaming brighter than ever. When I briefly talked to her that day she just said you will have this someday too. She was so incredibly happy. I wish our paths had crossed again over the years but sadly they didn’t. From everything I read in her obituary her course in life continued on with many wonderful things. Sounds like her vibrant caring personality, bright eyes, trademark dimples, smile and laugh have intertwined in many lives and left you with many wonderful memories.

Our family had the privilege of knowing Ralph and Joyce while they lived here in Taipei, Taiwan. We were grateful recipients of their warm hospitality. I was so inspired by Joyce's amazing quilts! I also enjoyed viewing their collection of cherished Christmas decorations and the framed photos from their family's travels while hearing wonderful stories about their traditions. As expats, we've seen many people come and go--few have left such an impression on me as Ralph and Joyce. She was an unforgettable role model of creating loving relationships, making the most of life and (that quality we're in such need of these days) grit. I'm blessed to have know her. I send my heartfelt condolences to Ralph and the family as you support each other, grieve, and celebrate her life together.

Joyce had 9 lives and she lived each one of them to the max. I worked closely with she and Ralph from 2003-09 and always felt their powerful dedication to each other. We deeply admired the active ways Joyce did so much good for students, friends, and community members, even when not feeling 100%. She had a memorable laugh, and no trouble expressing her honest thoughts in large or small groups. Thanks for that, Joyce. Sincere sympathy to you, Ralph, Jake, Ryah and family. Ellen and Jack
