Living Tribute

A Tribute to Our Families

In 1985, Hamilton's began a unique association with the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden called the “Living Tribute” project. In honor of those we serve, Hamilton’s Funeral Home, at the direction of Hamilton’s Academy of Grief & Loss, makes monetary donations to the Botanical Garden each spring and fall.  These contributions support the gardens as well as educational programming.

We began in 1987 to commemorate Arbor Day, traditionally designated as a time to plant community trees, as the day for our annual Living Tribute Dedication Ceremony.  A formal invitation is sent to all of the families Hamilton’s has served in the past 12 months. They are our guests and the guests of the Botanical Garden for a short ceremony to dedicate the plantings that have been made in memory of their family member, from Hamilton's donations. Refreshments are served and our guests are invited to visit, tour the garden area, locate the name of their family member in special Living Tribute Books, and look at the various displays of activities Hamilton's provides.
During the remainder of the year, these Living Tribute Books are kept on display at each of our funeral home locations.
We value our association with the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden through our continuing donations.  The opportunity to support the Botanical Garden is an expression of care we offer to the community as well as to Hamilton’s families.
